Our Artists

Want to be an Artist-in-Residence?

An Artist-in-Residence is contracted by Prison Arts Foundation (PAF) to work in the Criminal Justice setting. This may take place in a Prison, Secure Hospital, Probation Hostel or designated space with men, women, young people and juveniles.

You will be directly responsible to the Director of the Prison Arts Foundation.

Whilst in a prison environment or other contracted workplace you must adhere to the rules, regulations and procedures of that venue. If working within a prison, the Education Officer or appointed Senior Prison Official will assist you as a point of contact during your contracted hours.

You will be governed by the Official Secrets Act and will be required to adhere to the Prison Guidelines issued to you.

All work produced in collaboration with your workshop group remains the property of PAF on behalf of the members of that workshop group and the Prison.

General specification:

  • must have a working knowledge of teaching in a prison environment;
  • must have recent experience of working with a variety of groups in your chosen field;
  • must pass the Access to NI Prison Services Sites initial check and initial screening AND the DVA CTC Security Questionnaire;
  • must pass an Access NI POCVA check;
  • must be an independent, self-employed artist/practitioner responsible for own tax payments and national insurance contributions;
  • must have access to own transport.

Traditionally, writing and the visual arts/crafts have been used within the prison setting but Prison Arts Foundation has explored all art forms that are permitted within Prison environments.

Residencies can be diverse in their range, scope and length.

Category 1
Year Long – An Artist/Practitioner is contracted for one day a week over the course of one year.
Category 2
